MEASURING FOR LEATHER |
|
Custom boots or semi - custom boots can only be made as good as the measurements taken. By following these instructions exactly, we can then take these measurements and make a pair of boots that feel good, look good and help your riding position. Instructions for boots where the foot has already been determined. 1. Wear the breeches that you would normally wear with your boots for riding. 2. Take all measurements exactly, do not add or subtract anything from them. We will discuss any preferences you have after and make adjustments to give you the fit and height you desire. 3. You need a cloth tape measure that will mould to your leg without pressing in and giving a false measurement. 4. Sit down on a chair with your feet about a foot apart ( 30cm ) and your knees bent at 90 degrees. 5. Measure around the biggest part of each calf ( slide the tape up and down a little to make certain that this is the biggest spot ), do not pull the tape into your calf since this will give a false measurement. We can discuss how snug or loose you prefer to have your boots. Right calf________ Left calf________ 6. Stand up and smooth out any wrinkles in your breeches at the knee. A helper is very useful at this stage. Place the tape around the top of the calf at the smallest part just below the side of the actual knee joint, then sit down while holding the tape measure in place. Adjust the tape by sliding it back and forth working it into the top of the calf so that it is in the smallest part of the calf and is going straight around the calf and not on an angle. Keep the tape here for step # 7. Right calf top________ Left calf top________ 7. Put your finger nail at the top edge of the tape measure near the back of the knee on the outside of the leg. Measure from your finger nail down the back outside of the leg ( following the shape of the leg ) to the floor. We will discuss how tall you would like your boots to be and add an appropriate amount to this measurement while also allowing enough for the wrinkling at the ankle and lower calf. Right calf height________ Left calf height________ . Measurements 5 and 6 may be taken over a bare leg as well or instead of over breeches. Please tell us if this is the case and then tell us the type of breech that you would normally wear with your boots. ( thin, normal or heavy ). 8. Cross your legs and with your foot relaxed, measure around the point of the heel - ankle. Tell us if you have injured your ankle or have limited flexibility in your ankle, since this measurement will determine the throat of the boot size through which you must force your foot each time you put the boot on and take it off. Too tight and you will have difficulty, too loose and the boot will look and feel sloppy. Right instep________ Left instep________ Please advise us if your legs swell at times. We need to know if the calf is at your average size or at the smallest or largest. If you are not certain please take your calf measurement each week for at least three weeks. This will make it possible to make you a boot that you can get on and that looks the best it can for you. We have had people that vary from 1" to 1 ½" depending on heat, humidity, length of time spent on feet the day before or that day, or just periodic changes in their system. Think about your activities on a yearly basis. If you take the winter off from riding and other activities and then are more active during the season when you will wear your boots, discuss this with us so we can help you get a boot you are happy with. Consider time off for injuries or diet or lifestyle changes also. The better informed that we are, the better your boots will be for you. We can only input the information that we have, we are not able to guess the future and any anticipated changes in your measurements, without your help. If the boots are for a young person who may still be growing, or filling out in the calf, then we need to know the age, height and total leg length ( top of hip bone to floor in stocking feet ). The general leg build of mom and dad will help too. ( slim or muscular or heavy ). 9. If you also need to find the right size in a brand of boot, please measure the feet as follows: Use 2 blocks of wood or something straight that you can place at the front and back of your feet while standing, then measure the distance between the blocks of wood. Also measure the width of the foot using the blocks of wood in the same manner. The more accurate you are the better the boots will fit. For a young person who may still be growing we can go up a half size and add an insole that may be easily removed as the feet grow. |
